Biography

Edward Stein is a photographer, bookmaker and storyteller. Stein first began working in video and uses his experience in documentary filmmaking to shape his approach. He will often spend a year or longer photographing the same subject matter at different periods to capture the variations through the passage of time. Stein crafts his photobooks like a video montage by thinking of each page as an individual shot that he carefully sequences to tell a story. He prefers photography and books because of their non-linear nature. Unlike filmmaking, the viewers are not bound by time, and can view his works at their own pace.

His projects often focus in New York City where he currently works.  In 2014, Stein photographed a different neighborhood in Manhattan every week for over a year. He edited thousands of images into a self-published photobook about urban life, and the American Dream.

For his second project titled Bark,  Stein focused on the New York Botanical Garden. The cyclical nature of the four seasons became a central element in an 18-month long study. He plans to do a short-run of handmade editions.  In 2024, Stein has two more books planned for production.
